Enjoy a hike to the highest peak in Cuba and Follow the steps of Fidel Castro and his guerrilla men during the Revolutionary Campaign of 1958. All on the same excursion.
Depart from Villa Santo Domingo in a 4WD Jeep that will take you to Alto del Naranjo. Then, depending on your preference and on weather conditions, there are several variants to this excursion: Walk 3 kms to visit La Comandancia de La Plata, Fidel´s secret revolutionary headquarters in the 50´s. Then start trekking to El Pico Turquino, the highest peak in Cuba, taking the path known as Skyscraper. En route, stop at the ecological community La Platica. This is a campsite surrounded by mountains with a panoramic view where you will have lunch, dinner and overnight. The next morning, get all the power from your muscles for an 8-kilometre walk through a graded level 1 path (a difficult climb – for specialists only) and arrive to La Aguada, a basic mountain refuge. After a countryside lunch, continue to climb to the summit of Pico Turquino (5 kms) and return by the same path with dinner and overnight at La Aguada. Return on the 3rd day with a stopover at La Platica for another typical lunch. A second option would be, once in Alto del Naranjo, start trekking to Pico Turquino taking the path known as Skyscraper till the campsite La Platica. Then, follow an 8-kilometre walk through a graded level 1 path (a difficult climb for specialists only) and arrive to La Aguada, where you will have lunch, dinner and overnight. Next morning, climb to the summit of Pico Turquino and come back by the same trail till you reach La Platica to spend the second night. Lunch and dinner will be served here. Then your guide will take you on a visit to La Comandancia La Plata. Lunch the 3rd day will be served at the Visitor´s Centre of the Parque Nacional Turquino in Santo Domingo. A third alternative would be to walk for 3 kms from Alto del Naranjo until you get to La Comandancia de la Plata. Then start trekking to El Turquino taking the path known as Skyscraper till the refuge La Platica to overnight. Descend by the south mountainside until you get to La Majagua campsite (7 kms descending from Pico Turquino) for dinner. This itinerary is a lot more difficult- only for well-trained trekkers.
